You may qualify if you are:

  • In the final two years of a bachelor's degree
  • Enrolled in a master's degree program
  • A graduate with a bachelor's or master's degree

Students at eligible institutions in Japan or overseas can apply, and your academic background must suit the research unit you want to join.

You do not need to speak Japanese. IELTS and TOEFL scores are optional.

Current PhD students and PhD graduates are not eligible for this program. If you are currently enrolled at another institution, you need its approval.

04 · Application checklist

Prepare these in English

06 · Things you should know

Before you apply

Is this a permanent job in Japan?

No. This is a temporary research internship, not a permanent job offer or a guaranteed route to long-term residency.

Can I apply without Japanese?

Yes. Japanese is not required.

Can I apply without a STEM background?

The program focuses on science and technology, so you need an academic background that suits one of the available research units.

Will I automatically get accepted?

No. Places are competitive and depend on research fit, qualifications, funding and available space.

Can I bring my partner or family?

The program's financial and practical support does not extend to family members.

Can this lead to further study in Japan?

Potentially. OIST describes the internship as being for students interested in its PhD program, but admission is not guaranteed.
